Kenny slapped his wife Flourish once more on the face, this time she couldn’t take it any longer, and she screamed the words ‘infertile he-goat’ back at him. He had earlier used the words ‘infertile she-goat’ at her. Although she regretted insulting him, but she just couldn’t help herself anymore. This tension has being going on for three years in Kenny and Flourish’s marriage and it has being hell for them all the way. Flourish felt she has always endured his nagging and insults and let herself lose on this day!

Her husband has constantly accused her of committing several abortions when she was much younger, alleging that is she cannot conceive and bear a child for 6 years. Every time she begs him to attend their meeting with the doctor, he bluntly refuses and tells her she is the problem and not him. This was a daily battle for her; she starts to regret marrying him and wishes she could turn back the hands of time. But this is not the time for regrets, rather, a time to put right whatever is wrong.

Finally, they both decided to see the doctor after tying one more year to conceive without luck. The result came out and from the look on the doctor’s face, obviously there was a problem. One of them is infertile. Who could it be; the man or the woman? They both sat anxiously as the doctor breaks the news to them…

It’s a risky assumption to say you will always be fertile because you have evidence that shows you have been before now; although it is a positive statement to make, but it is not always the case.

Infertility is not a word borrowed from outer-space. In today’s world, many move about and do nothing about their status as it pertains to their reproductive organs or general wellbeing, forgetting that a combination of different issues in the body can result to infertility. Infertility is an alarming modern epidemic affecting more couples by the day. Credible reports indicates that 1 out of 6 couples today are experiencing difficulty with having children. What was once seen as a woman’s problem is now known to affect men equally. The natural approach to treating infertility solves the root causes of infertility, by addressing all body systems, rather than just focusing solely on the reproductive system.

Based on the clinical definition given by WHO on infertility; Infertility is the inability of a sexually active, non-contraception couple to achieve pregnancy in one year. Infertility can be considered as a permanent result of past contraceptive use, caused by vaccine immunizations, due to fate or retribution for past discretions and often regarded as only a women's problem.

Infertility is considered completely preventable despite its many non-preventable causes. World Health Organization today has further revealed that STi’s are considered a cause of infertility, yet some data have also shown the opposite: that infertility can increase STI acquisition. In 2009 WHO projected Infertility as a disease that results in the abnormal functioning of the male or female reproductive system. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the World Health Organization (WHO) recognize infertility as a disease as well.

Infertility is now stigmatized and treated like the ‘HIV menace’, for which different campaigns are done every now and then to curb this stigmatization. The inability to have a child or to become pregnant has resulted in being greatly ostracized, feared or shunned by the society, families and loved ones. It is also used as grounds for divorce and often justifies denial to access family traditions.

Unreasonably having more effect on women than men, the burden of disease is often assumed to fault the woman, as pregnancy and child birth are manifested in the woman. Discrimination against the infertile may include that a girl will never pass into womanhood (regardless of age), is no longer marriageable and become viewed as a burden on families, communities or societies if she cannot become pregnant.

Silence might be golden in some circumstances, but at this point it is downright destructive. Infertile couples should understand that they are not alone in this, in as much as individuals tend to be shy about this subject; silence is still not the best option. Talk to a medical practitioner and get treated today, treatments for fertility problems differ for both sex. For women, it depends on what is keeping her from getting pregnant; sometimes the cause isn't known. Treatment for the man largely concerns the sperm, the sperm quality is most time questioned, the doctor collects the sperm to know what measures he would adopt in-other to increase the number of healthy sperm for the man; this process is called insemination.

As was mentioned earlier many couples who can’t become pregnant suffer from a combination of sub-clinical conditions. These conditions can’t cause infertility on their own but in combination, to a large extent can reduce a couple’s probability of conceiving. For example; a gluten intolerance alone cannot cause infertility; however, the resulting inflammation in the gut can minimize your nutrient absorption and lead to deficiencies in nutrients you need for optimal sperm, egg and hormone production and a healthy pregnancy.

Exposure to heavy metals, radiation, and toxic chemicals in some foods, drugs and other products can damage DNA. Recent Nutrigenomic (a study of the effects of nutrients on gene expression) research suggests what we eat can influence our gene structure and expression.

Further minimize the exposure to toxic [paint fumes, dry-cleaning chemicals, petrol based liquid, pesticides. chemicals because they interfere with your hormone and it affects the sperm thereby disrupting spermatogenesis (formation of sperm).

Avoid taking unfiltered tap water; our waterways are constantly being polluted by industrial waste and byproducts, pharmaceutical drugs, pesticides and herbicides and commercial cleaning products. Use a dual filtration water system that filters particles smaller than 1 micron in the shower and kitchen.

Aim to eat an optimal fertility diet; a fertility diet should be as fresh as possible and organic wherever possible. Key elements are; good quality protein sources (favor vegetable sources of protein) and good fats. Avoiding dangerous fats is another important step but it’s often disregarded, consuming trans fats hidden in foods such as; doughnuts, biscuits, candy, chocolate, chips, pies, fries, takes away and thousands of other foods may increase your risk of infertility by as much as 70 percent?

Avoid the two most common allergens, studies have found that women with multiple allergies and food intolerances were more likely to miscarry. An overactive immune system is more likely to attack its own body cells thereby leading to the concurrent loss of the fetus.

Have an STD check, most people believe both they and their partner are STD free, but the l fact is that they are carriers and don’t know, this ignorance can cause great damage.

Avoid smoking, coffee, instead take more of Selenium, Magnesium, Calcium, B12, B6, Folic acid, Vitamin C, Omega-3 fats food supplements. This battle of infertility can be won; it only needs that commitment for a change in this season. This challenge will pass, don’t be agitated, eat healthy and less fatty foods; in all, please live right.

Good luck
